Palestine Mortgaged to the Rothschilds

A note on this oneThe headline repeats an unverified rumor that was false. The claim that the Rothschilds owned or controlled Palestine became a durable antisemitic conspiracy theory, and the headline reads that way out of context. The article itself is not making that argument: it is a Christian restorationist piece arguing for Jewish return, in the paternalistic register of 1844. It is here for the body, not the headline.

"It is said abroad that Palestine has been mortgaged to the Rothschilds, as security for a loan advanced to the Sultan. The rumor further asserts that, among the possibilities of the future, is the erection of Palestine, on the conclusion of a peace, into a Jewish kingdom." And later: "The creation of a Jewish kingdom promises the speediest method of arriving at this. There are millions of Hebrews scattered over Europe, who would avail themselves of such a restoration."

Fifty-two years before the Zionist movement existed, an American paper is already running the whole argument: the land is neglected and cursed, a Jewish kingdom would restore it, and Europe’s persecuted Jews would come.
