The Endlessly Embattled Land Of Palestine

The bloody story of Palestine does not go back 10, 20, or even 100 years. It reaches over nineteen centuries of fact and legend, exile and homecoming, death and destruction. But the events of our time have their cause mainly in the past 50 years, a period which must be understood if the present is to make any sense.

ELEVEN YEARS AGO, left homeless in 1956 after the Suez war drove them from their home in Israel, these Arab children queued for food in a Jordan refugee camp. Accepting barbed wire enclosures as normal barriers to the outside world, many of them grew up to join the Palestine Liberation Force which, just last week, once again found itself on the losing side in a Middle East conflagration. Today, after the Israeli armies swept once again across Arabian territory, many more such refugees face the prospect of life in camps, perhaps dreaming of the day they will take up arms in the unending Middle East conflict.
