18 Israeli Arabs Seized at Village

Transcribed from the clipping
“Eighteen Israeli Arabs were arrested today as they tried to reoccupy the village of Berem on the Lebanese frontier… The former residents of Berem have recently staged protests against the Government’s refusal to return them to their village, from which they were evicted in 1948 during Israel’s war of independence.”
Context added by this archive
Henry Kamm. Bir’im — Berem here — was emptied in 1948 on a promise of two weeks. Twenty-four years later its people are arrested for walking back into it, and the paper calls them Israeli Arabs, which is to say citizens of the state that will not let them go home.
