“TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israeli troops opened fire on Palestinian rioters Friday in the occupied West Bank of the Jordan River, killing one person and wounding about 30, Arab sources said. They identified the slain youth as 18-year-old Jamal Shamir.
He was the 11th Palestininan killed by security forces in demonstrations against Israeli rule on the West Bank this year. The fresh outburst was prompted by a new Israeli tax. A journalist in the West Bank town of Nablus reported troops fired on hundreds of demonstrators swarming through the Christian sector of the city.
An army officer said the demonstrators threw stones at Israeli soldiers and set fire to the tax office and the Israel National Bank building. There was no official comment by the Israeli military command on the demonstrations. An uneasy, six-week calm ended.”

Five days before a bomb in Beirut killed Ghassan Kanafani, a Montana paper carries the death of an 18-year-old in Nablus and names him: Jamal Shamir. The copy also counts him — the eleventh that year — and says what the protest was about, which was a tax.
