“Arab men, women and children began leaving the city by boat, truck and other means when the battle began. Additional thousands of the 30,000 Arabs in the important communications center crowded docks in the British-controlled port area and assembly centers for evacuation across the bay to Acre and other Arab cities… It was learned the only Arabs due to remain in Haifa will be Moslem and Christian clergymen who will watch over religious shrines. British army transport assisted in the evacuation, which will continue today.”

The continuation carries what the headline cannot: they left when the battle began, the only ones staying were clergy, and British transport helped.
