“Washington—The inability of the United Nations to solve the Palestine crisis—or even to make partial headway toward a solution of that aggravating and dangerous problem—is the great tragic fact that emerges as the British prepare to give up their mandate over the Holy Land at midnight Friday.
But behind the failure of the UN to fulfill its role as the great peace keeping agency in the world are other more fundamental facts, which many may overlook in their haste to blame the UN and the very idea on which it is founded for its shortcomings… AS IT STANDS we have alienated just about everybody concerned in the Palestine question.
The Jews resent American policy in failing to carry through with partition. The Arabs resent our ever having supported partition in the first place. The British resent our efforts to keep them saddled with the burden of the Palestine mandate.”
