“Jerusalem, Sept. 18 — (AP) — Guns fell silent in Jerusalem this morning as Count Folke Bernadotte, United Nations Palestine mediator, achieved fleetingly in death the Holy Land peace he cherished during life. A couple of rifle shots broke an unusual calm and contrasted with the bombardment which rocked Jerusalem last night. The stunned quiet was marred only by a report from the Arabs that the Jews had moved back into the Arab college in the area of former government house. The college is in the Red Cross zone from which both sides were forced to evacuate at Bernadotte’s insistence… Dr. Ralph J. Bunche, chief of the United Nations Palestine Secretariat, officially described the attack on Bernadotte’s automobile as a ‘planned and cold-blooded assassination.’ Bunche was notified today by U. S. Consul General John J. MacDonald, chairman of the Palestine Truce Board of appointment, that Arkady A. Sobolev, acting secretary-general of the U. N. at Lake Success, had designated Bunche acting Palestine mediator. The acting mediator said the seat in which Bernadotte and Col. Serrot were sitting contained 10 certain and two possible bullet perforations.”

A United Nations mediator shot dead in his car in Jerusalem, and this printing names nobody as having done it. The killing is a planned and cold-blooded assassination in the acting mediator’s words, the bullet holes are counted, and the agent is absent. The archive holds the same paper-voice question in dozens of later headlines about Palestinian deaths; this one is useful because the victim was a Swedish count.
