“The Communist Party is only a negligible force in the rest of Israel, but its considerable strength in Nazareth is largely due to the fact that it has consistently and loudly assumed the role of champion of the 170 thousand members of the Arab minority in Israel.”

Reuters, on the first popular election in Nazareth’s history. The frame is the Hammer and Sickle against the Cross in the town where Christ grew up, which is how an Omaha paper was going to sell it.
Inside that frame is the fact that mattered for the next forty years: the only party campaigning for Palestinian citizens of Israel was the Communist Party, and that is why they voted for it.
