Transcribed from the clipping

“CAIRO, Egypt, June 11 [Reuters]—A military tribunal in Gaza, coastal strip on the borders of Egypt and Israel, today sentenced to death a Palestinian, Hassan Abu Haggag, for spying for Israel. It sentenced another Palestinian, Mohamed Mahmoud Abu Mussa, to life imprisonment on a similar charge.

Egypt announced yesterday the government which occupied Gaza in 1948 ‘to preserve the area for the Arabs,’ would shortly grant it self-government.”

Context added by this archive

Two hundred words of wire copy in Chicago in June 1954, and three things in it. The noun is Palestinian, used twice, as a nationality, ten years before the Palestine Liberation Organization existed. Two ordinary Palestinians are named in full.

And the last sentence says plainly that Egypt occupied Gaza in 1948, with Egypt’s own stated reason in quotation marks — to preserve the area for the Arabs — and a promise of self-government. The item beside it on the page is about a suit and a wallet taken from a parked car.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
