“In the letter captioned, ‘Calls Palestine Deal All Wrong,’ Yasir A. Khammash talks about the ‘massacre’ of Deir Yassin… I ask him to produce the evidence; heresay and generalities are not proof.”

The reply, eleven days later, from one of the three writers Khammash had been answering. The word massacre goes inside quotation marks and the evidence is demanded. By January 1954 testimony from Deir Yassin had been in the Evening Star of Washington for nearly six years, in a survivor’s own words. The material existed. It had stopped being in anyone’s hands. “heresay” is as printed.
