“REPRESENTATIVE CELLER of New York, chairman of the House judiciary committee, is not doing the state of Israel or his co-religionists in this country any good and he is certainly not increasing his own stature by his efforts to prevent a hearing by a Senate judiciary subcommittee of spokesmen for Arab refugees and for the relief organizations… must hear — and do something about.

Congress helped… under the most distressing conditions… the lowlands of the Jordan valley are… heat or sanitary facilities in tents and… mountains of Lebanon.

Relief organizations readily attest… degeneration which is taking place… political sources say that the refugees… a dangerous core of discontent and a… for agitation in the Middle East — agit… sharpens the hatred for Israel…”

The clipping in this archive is the editorial-page masthead strip and the headline. The opening was read from the paper’s own page, The Courier-Journal, Sunday 4 September 1949, page 27. The editorial runs in two columns and the viewer would not show the foot of either, so the passage is transcribed with the gaps marked rather than guessed.

A Louisville editorial page in September 1949, with the whole staff named across the top, headlining the Palestinian refugees as a case that will not be quieted — and using homeless, not displaced or Arab refugees.

What it is actually about is an American congressman trying to stop a Senate subcommittee from hearing them at all, and the paper says so in its first sentence. The editorial drew letters.

The same paper printed replies quoting its headline back at it on 9 September, page 10, and on 25 September, page 40 — the second of them beginning on the contrary, it is not my… Four and a half years later the same letters column printed a reader telling Yasir A. Khammash to produce the evidence for the massacre at Deir Yassin (CP-1954-004).

The paper had already printed the case in its own voice.
