Transcribed from the clipping

“Six more public elementary schools in the former Jordanian sector of Jerusalem were quietly opened this week by the Israeli education authorities. This brought to 22 the number now holding classes. Before the Arab-Israeli fighting in June there were 26 elementary schools and two high schools.”

Context added by this archive

Four months after the occupation began. Twenty-two of twenty-eight, and the teachers on the West Bank are refusing to meet their classes. The schools are the first move and the universities are the long one — Birzeit closes in 1981 and this archive follows it to 1990.
