“The alien registration last January signed up only 6,500 citizens of Arab countries in the city — far short of the evident reality. It listed, for example, only 39 Palestinians… only those who left before the British mandate expired in 1948 hold Palestinian papers.”

John L. Hess on Atlantic Avenue a month after Munich, among the bakeries and the Arabic press — Fred Koury of Al Hoda, the oldest Arabic paper in the country. Thirty-nine Palestinians on the register of a city that had thousands, because the paperwork that would make a person Palestinian stopped being issued in 1948.

One of them, born in what is now Israel and moved four times since, asks the reporter: where are you going to go?
