U.S. Doctors Study Mystery In West Bank Tulkarem, Occupied West Bank Two American specialists in epi- demic control began yesterday to investigate the current wave of mys- terious illness among Palestinian schoolchildren, which the Israelis blame on mass hysteria and the Arabs link to poison. Drs.
Philip Landrigan and Bess Miller, epidemiologists from the Centers for Dis- ease Control in Atlanta, began an "inde- pendent investigation" of the unexplained illness — characterized by dizziness, nau- sea, blurred vision and headaches. More than 800 peopie have been stricken since March 21 in the Jenin and Tulkarem areas of the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
Most of the victims have been teenage girls. The epidemic tapered off, then peaked Sunday when at least 394 girls were hospitalized. The Geneva-based World Health Orga- nization of the United Nations also sent two doctors - an epidemiologist
