“Newspapers often refer to violence against settlers as ‘pogroms,’ a word usually used to describe anti-Semitic actions against Jews… The Jerusalem Post said vigilantism must be eradicated, for it makes ‘a mockery of Israel’s pretense to dispense equal justice in the (occupied) territories.’”

A news agency, inside a news story, stopping to tell readers how newspapers use a word and what that word ordinarily means. It is not a stylebook entry and should never be described as one. Six years later a settler leader would use the word exactly as described, in the Miami Herald. The parenthetical “(occupied)” is the wire’s own insertion into a quotation that did not contain it.
