Pope Names an Arab Priest

To Be Patriarch in Jerusalem Special to The New York Times JERUSALEM, Dec. 29 - Pope John Paul Il has appointed an Arab priest who was born in Nazareth to be Patri- arch of Jerusalem for Latin Rite Catholics.
The priest, Michel Asaad Sabbah, president of Bethlehem University, is the first Palestinian to be appointed to the post since the patriarchate was es- tablished over 800 years ago. Father Sabbah, 54 years old, will re- place Giacomo Giuseppe Beltritti, a 77- year-old Italian, who is retiring. The appointment was announced at the Vatican Monday.
"This is the first apointment of a Palestinian_patriarch in 1,000 years," said Elias Freij, the Mayor of Bethle- hem. "It is very, very significant.
