“Israeli soldiers shot dead a Jewish settler in the occupied West Bank tonight, apparently believing him to be a Palestinian gunman, the army said. The episode — described by an army spokesman as a ‘tragic error’…”

Context added by this archive

Alan Cowell, six days after the mosque. One settler killed by Israeli soldiers, and the army’s phrase for it goes in the headline in quotation marks.

Lower down the same page the count of the Palestinian dead is still being revised, and the paper notes the revision may not account for “the Palestinian practice of quickly removing bodies for burial without notifying Israeli military authorities”. One death gets a named error. Twenty-nine get an arithmetic problem.
