Transcribed from the clipping

Advices from Aleppo, by Way of Leghorn, say that Jaffa and Jerusalem are both in the Hands of Ali Bey, who has declared that if he was joined by the King of Prussia he would overturn the Ottoman Empire.

How this transcription was made

Read from the scan at 5 to 8 times magnification on 25 October 2026. The long s is set throughout this page and has been transcribed as a modern s. No character the type sets as a long s has been read as an f, and no f has been read as a long s; where the two could not be told apart the word was left unread rather than guessed. The clipping is a crop of body type. It carries no masthead, no folio line, no running head and no page number, so neither the publication name nor the printing date can be confirmed from the page itself. Both come from the hand-typed slide label and are recorded here unchanged. This item carries neither a headline nor a dateline of its own: it is a single paragraph in a column of unrelated London paragraphs. The headline field holds the paragraph’s own opening words, and nothing has been composed to fill it. The excerpt is the whole of the paragraph — it is the only matter on the clipping that concerns Palestine, which is why the excerpt is short rather than cut. The surrounding paragraphs are a letter from Leghorn, a General Court of the East India Company on the warehousing and export of tea, and a paragraph on Poland; the tea matter is independent support for a 1773 printing but is not transcribed. Ali Bey’s declaration is reported speech on the page, not a quotation, and is not recorded as a quote.

Context added by this archive

Two lines of type. Jaffa and Jerusalem change hands in a subordinate clause, and the sentence’s real subject is what Ali Bey might do to the Ottoman Empire with Prussian help. Nobody in either city is named, counted or quoted.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
