LEGHORN, March 20.

Transcribed from the clipping
LEGHORN, March 20. Ali Bey’s fortunate Progress in the plundering of Syria and Palestine is confirmed by the last Accounts received from Cairo. Besides Jerusalem and Joppa, the Towns of Hebron, Tiberias, Cesarea, Hippos and Capernaum, have surrendered to him and his Allies.
About 12,000 of the Inhabitants of Mount Lebanon make Part of this united Army which is now before Damascus, and after taking that Place, is to attack Seyd, Tripoli and Aleppo.
Other Letters say, that if Ali Bey succeeds in taking Damascus, he intends going with Part of his Army to Arabia to take Mecca and Medina, against which Places Hassan Bey is marching with a considerable Body of Men. VENICE, March 23.
We have the following Account from Aleppo: “Egypt seems to recover its ancient Lustre under the Government of Ali Bey, who is at present at Grand Cairo. His General, after taking Gaza, Nazareth, Jerusalem, and Jaffa, beat the Bassa of Damascus’s Army; after which, the Bassa having received a Reinforcement commanded by the Tair Omer, Lord of St.
John d’Acri, determined to risk another Battle, in which he was likewise defeated. When this sad News arrived at Constantinople, Eight Bassas received Orders to go immediately to the Promised Land, to prevent the Enemies farther Progress.”
How this transcription was made
Read from the scan at 4 to 11 times magnification on 25 October 2026. The long s is set throughout this page and has been transcribed as a modern s. No character the type sets as a long s has been read as an f, and no f has been read as a long s; where the two could not be told apart the word was left unread rather than guessed. The clipping is a crop of body type. It carries no masthead, no folio line, no running head and no page number, so neither the publication name nor the printing date can be confirmed from the page itself. Both come from the hand-typed slide label and are recorded here unchanged. The page does carry internal date evidence: a London paragraph dated April 1. reports the Spanish galleon l’Oriflamme “cast away the 27th of July last” after sailing “from Cadiz for Lima in February 1770”, which places the latest matter in the column in 1771 and is consistent with the labelled printing date of 13 June 1771, about ten weeks after the last dateline. The datelines run FLORENCE, Feb. 26.; VIENNA, March 16.; LEGHORN, March 20.; VENICE, March 23.; PARIS, March 25.; April 1. The VENICE figure was checked at 13x against the old-style numerals and is a 3, not a 5. No headline of any kind is printed over this matter; the headline field holds the printed dateline of the item the excerpt begins at, and nothing has been composed to fill it. The excerpt starts at the Leghorn item, the first that concerns Palestine; the Florence and Vienna items before it are not transcribed. Spellings are the paper’s and are kept as set: Joppa, Cesarea, Hippos, Seyd, d’Acri, Bassa, and the un-apostrophed “the Enemies farther Progress”. The quoted Aleppo account opens with a quotation mark and its close is set at the end of the Venice item.
Context added by this archive
A Leghorn report of March 1771 names eight places taken in Syria and Palestine in one sentence — Jerusalem, Joppa, Hebron, Tiberias, Cesarea, Hippos, Capernaum — and an Aleppo account on the same page names Gaza, Nazareth, Jerusalem and Jaffa in another. The only person of the region named on the page is “the Tair Omer, Lord of St.
John d’Acri”, who appears as a commander and not as a speaker. A Florence item earlier in the column, not transcribed here, reports that Ali Bey “has been killed by his Soldiers” and adds that “this News seems to want Confirmation”.
