THE MAINE COLONY IN PALESTINE.

years before Christ. This prediction has been fulfilled. A Brief Call at Malta. “As you approach this island, it appears like a massive pit of rocks. There is not a tree nor a foot of green soil to be seen. Yet there are orange groves, pomegranates and beautiful gardens. Yur can see nothing from the outside, it is so walled in.
The island is seventeen miles in length and eight in width. It is literally covered with houses, it is an English possession, but it is in African waters. The streets are wide, better paved and much cleaner and better in all respects than any we had ever seen in the East. “It is a great naval and military station.
I believe there was only one Protestant church on the island, but that was a very fine building. The cathedral of St. John is a magnificent building two hundred feet long and one hundred wide, exclusive of annexes. It is said to have been built in the fifteenth century by the Grand Master of the Knights of Malta.” The Trackless Desert.
“Away on the trackless desert stand two granite pillars, twenty-five feet apart. No one seems to know what for or by whom they were placed there. The Bedouin Arabs, however say these ancient landmarks indicate the boundary line between Asia and Africa.
The great Arabian desert is not much what I supposed it to be, it is uneven and hilly, containing miles of hard gravelly land, mud sloughs and salt pools, with here and there large patches of vegetation. Stunted olive tree, afforded grazing grounds for camels, sheep, and goats.
These plains are also supplied with water which makes them the tenting grounds for people crossing the desert. The hostile Bedouin and wandering tribes of Ishmael camp however, wherever they find feed for their flocks and then they watch for plunder.
It is safer however, to have a Bedouin guide than any other, for if you are overtaken by them he can manage his tribe, better than anybody else.
