Picturesque peasants bid the alien wanderer welcome in the famous vineyards of ancient Hebron

“HEBRON, the home of the Patriarch Abraham, is a town of peculiar interest, both Biblical and archaeological, and because it was renowned for the historical vines of Eschol. These still bear fruit larger than the ordinary grape found in any other part of the world.
The Moslem law commanded the peasant to bid the wanderer welcome into his vineyard to partake of his luscious fruit, and this law, of hospitality is still practiced by the Arab fellaheen of today, with the difference that today the expectation of ‘backsheesh’ always accompanies the welcome.”

Five photographs across a full page in Portland, Oregon, in July 1909, and the people are in every one of them: three old men outside a door, a family standing among rocks, men sitting over coffee, and several hundred people at a feast day. The captions name them as men of Hebron, a peasant family, Mohammedans.
The headline calls them picturesque peasants and the visitor an alien wanderer, which is the register of the whole genre — but the pictures are of a crowd, and you cannot argue with a photograph of a crowd.
