Whose Homeland? and Pledges of Balfour Declaration. To the Editor of The Noto York Times: On several Journalistic Visite to Pales- tine I have studied the complicated Zionist question-studied it untIl my head was awhirl and my heart heavy with sympathy for both sides.

Two in- emerged; controvertible facts always and I venture to suggest that these be held in mind by all who consider the subject. The firat pertains to the "homeland." According to the Old Testament, Joshua led the Israelites into Canaan about 1500 B. C. (I use round figures, easily remembered.) The nation. continued under the judges for nearly five hun- dred years.

Saul, the first king, came to the throne about 1000 B. The Jewish kingdom, or kingdoms, lasted for approximately five hundred years more, until the exile. After the return, the Jews remained, as a subject people, with a short period of self-rule under the Maccab
