Arabs and Jews in Palestine

“Racial prejudice has played a large part in history. One modern instance is Nazi Germany, where the superiority of the so-called Nordic race is a matter of faith. Another is found in the conflict between Arabs and Jews in Palestine. The former claim the country as their own and resent the colonization of Jews as an intrusion.
Great Britain, which holds the mandate for Palestine, has a hard task in maintaining order. The aspiration of the Jews, scattered among all the nations of the world, for a home land of their own, found expression in the Balfour Declaration, issued during the World War. This promised that they should have a safe return to Palestine, the country of their origin.
It was, however, largely overrun by Arab tribes, who resented any intrusion. In all the years since, the bitterness has not diminished. The task of dealing with Muslim fanaticism, whether directed against Jews or Christians, has always been hard. Great Britain is living up to her obligations, and is sending more troops to preserve order.
The Arabs are apparently unwilling to take into consideration the fact that Jewish immigration has been greatly for the benefit of the country. Thus the problem remains unsolved.”
