Tension Is High in Jerusalem
Special Cable to The New York Times

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM, April 20. — Tension was high here today as the authorities requisitioned taxis and buses to be used to transport policemen to scenes of trouble. Their preparations were linked to reports that Arabs in villages near Jerusalem were planning to invade the city tomorrow.
All the Jews in the Beersheba district have been moved to this city in trucks under police escort. Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope, the British High Commissioner, has summoned Arab leaders to a meeting tomorrow to discuss the situation. A delegation of leaders will come from Jaffa with renewed insistence on compliance with the Arab demands.
At the same time Jewish leaders will confer with the district commissioner at Jaffa to demand more stringent measures to end the disorders. The president of the Palestine Arab party joined with the Nationalist party at Nablus today in an appeal to Syrians for assistance in the present movement.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
