JERUSALEM, Feb. 4. — Arabs throughout Palestine held a general strike today in sympathy with Arab nationalists in Syria. All work was suspended, with only cafés, restaurants and pharmacies remaining open. In Jerusalem several hundred students marched the streets carrying Arab banners and shouting.

“Down with British colonization of Palestine, down with French colonization of Syria!” Cooperating with them were students of Terra Santa (Italian) College. The Syrian strike has been going on for seventeen days in protest against the action of French authorities in seizing the papers and closing the headquarters of the National Bloc.

The National Bloc issued a proclamation yesterday asking the people to terminate the strike, but this was regarded as merely a gesture by the leaders to absolve themselves of responsibility because they knew the French High Commissioner intended taking drastic measures against agitators.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
