Arabs Reported Considering Evacuation Of Jerusalem As Jews Nab Nearby Towns JERUSALEM, April 23 (INS) —Jewish militiamen captured several villages outside Jerusalem today amid reports the Arabs are considering evacuation of the Holy city. A Jewish agency spokesman said the evacuation policy, attributed to the Grand Mufti, has a three-fold purpose.

1—To Besmirch the Jews as ruthless attackers and invaders. 2—To influence the Arab governments and induce them to send more powerful help.

3—To prepare the ground for invasion by regular armies which [BOXED ITEM set between rules inside the column at this point, a separate Associated Press dispatch, not part of the INS story: “AMMAN, Trans-Jordan, April 23 (AP)—King Abdullah urged all Arab nations to send their armies into Palestine to battle the Jews when the British give up their mandate May 15. / Trans-Jordan’s monarch said the Arab world must act against Zionism—the push for a Jewish homeland in the Holy Land—because ‘our peace and liberty are at stake.’”] would be represented as not a contravention of international obligations but a move to save Palestine Arabs from extermination.

CONCERN FELT Cairo reported that concern is felt throughout the middle east over Jewish seizure of Haifa and many persons are discussing openly the possibility of intervention by Arab armies. Great importance is attached to next week’s talks among the Arab premiers at Amman when they will decide whether or not to commit their regular armies to the Palestine.

Victory may bring intervention of armies of neighboring Arab countries. Military leaders think attacks would come from north (1) by Syrian and Lebanese forces; from east (2) by Iraq and Trans-Jordan troops; and south (3) by Egyptian and Saudi Arabian forces. Stiff fighting preceded the new Jewish captures near Jerusalem. The Haganah troops were said to have incurred losses in capturing the Arab strongholds of Beitiksa and Shafat, and in a continuing assault of Nebisamwil. They launched their new offensive as Haganah fighters in Haifa consolidated their hold on the port city from which 60,000 Arabs are evacuating a mass exodus.

Used As Bases. Arabs in these villages were said to have used them as bases for attacks on the adjacent Jewish settlements of Neve Yacov, Ataroth and others.”
