“Jan Christiaan Smuts, Prime Minister of South Africa, sees ‘no alternative to partition’ in Palestine but adds that ‘nobody wishes it to be achieved through massacre and international complications.’ The former Boer General recognizes that Great Britain has her difficulties and ‘suffers from bitter disappointment over Palestine,’ but does not assume that the plan to partition Palestine is in immediate danger, expressing the view that the American trusteeship proposal was intended to ‘prevent a terrible situation.’ The situation in Palestine is certainly deplorable, with both sides resorting to terrible atrocities in the name of freedom and the likelihood that more widespread fighting may occur.”

A Black newspaper in the Jim Crow South, printing the Prime Minister of South Africa on how another country should be divided. Smuts was five weeks from the election that put the National Party in and made apartheid the law. The paper calls the dilemma deplorable and does not say whose.
