Palestine Welcomes Black Jews

“CHICAGO—Thousands of Black Jews in Palestine live in complete democracy with white Jews from four of the world’s most racial bigoted nations, says author-journalist Roi Ottley in a July Negro Digest article describing the color problem in the Near East. ‘Jewish immigrants from Germany, United States, Union of South Africa and Britain are heavily represented in Palestine. Yet to publicity display racial or religious prejudice in the Holy Land is to have the public denounce one for bad taste, fascism, and bigotry.’ Black Jews enter Palestine mostly from Yemen, the Negro Digest feature says, and this greatly lowers the number of white Jewish immigrants that can enter from other countries. Despite this quota problem, however, Ottley continues, these Yemenites are welcomed by white Jews. ‘Black Jews in Palestine range from deepest black to very light brown,’ the author points out. ‘And they are today playing a very prominent part in raising the standards of the new state by their strict adherence to orthodox Hebrew religion.’”
