Transcribed from the clipping

“Haifa, April 23 (Friday) (INS).—Jewish forces won complete military control of Haifa last night and today 60,000 Arabs began a mass evacuation from the great port city on Palestine’s northwest coast. The Arab spurned Jewish truce terms starting their exodus.”

Context added by this archive

The same International News Service lead as the Idaho Statesman (CP-1948-024), cut to two sentences. The second one is the paper’s own compression: where the fuller printing quotes a spokesman refusing the terms, this reads “The Arab spurned Jewish truce terms starting their exodus” — a reason given in the paper’s voice instead of the man’s.

“The Arab” singular against “their” plural is the paper’s own setting.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.

Something wrong here, or something you know about this clipping? The archive is still being built and corrections are wanted: maria@rozumstudio.com, quoting CP-1948-026.
