Bunche Says Palestine War Threatens Peace Of World

“PARIS (NNPA) — Dr. Ralph J. Bunche, UN acting Palestine Mediator, has warned the UN General Assembly that if the ‘precarious truce’ got out of hand it would mean a threat to peace in the Middle East and the world, it was learned last Wednesday.
War may break out again in the Holy Land unless the United Nations can force upon Jews and Arabs better cooperation with the UN truce supervision, Dr. Bunche declared to the Security Council, Thursday, October 14.
He told the fifty-eight nation Assembly’s Political Committee, where the Palestine issue is being reexamined, that it was ‘indispensable’ for ‘it to take a firm stand towards its solution.’ He said the ‘time is ripe’ for a settlement.
He said that the General Assembly’s decision of last November 29 in regard to the ‘special position of Jews’ in Palestine could not be ignored. For himself he said he was ‘rigidly bound’ by that resolution.
He stated that the General Assembly should set forth its position on the following political factors: Permanent peace in Palestine, the Jewish State, the boundaries of such a state, Jerusalem, international guarantee for boundaries, Arabs and Palestinian guarantees for the rights of all Palestinians, repatriation and resettlement of Arab refugees, and the machinery of UN intervention in the problem of Palestine.
Dr. Bunche spoke at some length of how the late mediator Count Folke Bernadotte pursued his task with impartiality in Palestine and did not favor one view or the other. The mediator was not influenced by either Jewish claims to a historic right to Palestine or, on the other hand, by decisions previously taken by the international community in regard to Arab claims.”
