Arab Radio Rejects Israel’s Peace Bid
Situation In Jerusalem Becomes Grave

“TEL AVIV, Aug. 6—Arab radio broadcasts flatly rejected tonight Israel’s bid for a peace conference on the Holy Land. The situation in Jerusalem — where sniping and sporadic shelling have continued since the new truce began—appeared more grave and UN truce observers rushed to the scene.
In the first Arab reaction to the peace talks proposal made yesterday by Israel Foreign Minister Moshe Shertok, the Beirut radio declared: ‘We don’t recognize the existence of the Jewish state. We will not speak with terrorists. We decided in 1936 not to sit at a conference with Jews and there is no reason for a change today.’
The Arab radio at Ramallah, 10 miles north of Jerusalem, also lashed out violently at the Jews in a broadcast turning down the peace bid. King Abdullah of Trans-Jordan, in commenting on the Jewish peace proposal, indicated that the refugee problem must be settled first before any possible negotiations could be undertaken.
The problem of an estimated 300,000 refugees who fled from Jewish-held areas during the Palestine fighting continues to complicate peace negotiation efforts of Count Folke Bernadotte. Shertok had agreed to consider the return of hardship Arab refugee cases but refused to consider the return of the full 300,000 until proposed peace talks are completed.”
