Arab Radio Rejects Israel’s Peace Bid

“TEL AVIV, Aug. 6—Arab radio broadcasts flatly rejected tonight Israel’s bid for a peace conference on the Holy Land… In the first Arab reaction to the peace talks proposal made yesterday by Israel Foreign Minister Moshe Shertok, the Beirut radio declared: ‘We don’t recognize the existence of the Jewish state. We will not speak with terrorists. We decided in 1936 not to sit at a conference with Jews and there is no reason for a change today’… The problem of an estimated 300,000 refugees who fled from Jewish-held areas during the Palestine fighting continues to complicate peace negotiation efforts of Count Folke Bernadotte. Shertok had agreed to consider the return of hardship Arab refugee cases but refused to consider the return of the full 300,000 until proposed peace talks are completed.”
