“LONDON, Aug. 2.—Britain has given Hashemite Jordan (Trans-Jordan) £500,000 ($2,000,000) to help the Arab kingdom resettle Palestine Arab refugees on its territory. An official British source reported today he understands the United States is matching the gift with a similar amount.

(The State Department said in Washington there is ‘no foundation’ to the report that the United States will match Britain’s gift…) This is believed to be the first time the British have made a direct contribution to an Arab government to resettle the refugees who fled when war came to Palestine. Authoritative estimates place the number of Arab refugees at 500,000 to 800,000.

Many of them sought safety in King Abdullah’s territory.”
