Transcribed from the clipping

Christian Peacemaker Teams coordinator Gene Stoltzfus introduces the Harriet Hanson award, which the Chicago-based peace and justice agency Synapses recently gave to the unrecognized Palestinian villages in Israel.

Accepting the award on behalf of the villagers during Synapses’ 10th anniversary observance was Anna Mustapha, the only Arab member of the Chicago board of education. Synapses honored the Palestinian villages for their organized non-violent effort to survive and become recognized so they can receive such basic services as water, electricity and schools.

Stoltzfus and other CPT members met many of the villagers during a CPT visit to Israel in June. Stoltzfus is scheduled to present the award in person during a Synapses-sponsored visit to Israel and Palestine this month.

How this transcription was made

Read from the scan by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by optical character recognition and not by a person. The clipping carries no masthead or date line, so its date and newspaper rest on the record it arrived with, not on anything visible in the scan.

Date check: No masthead or date line is visible on this clipping — the scan is cropped to the photograph and its caption only, so the 1991-10-31 date could not be confirmed against the page.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.

Something wrong here, or something you know about this clipping? The archive is still being built and corrections are wanted: maria@rozumstudio.com, quoting CP-1991-025.
