“Israeli tanks moved deeper into the West Bank on Sunday, tightening their grip on Bethlehem and five other towns in the widest operation against the Palestinians in years. Four Palestinians — among them a 16-year-old — were killed Sunday.”

Context added by this archive

Mark Lavie for the AP, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, six weeks after 11 September. The photograph is of an Israeli soldier on an armoured personnel carrier beside a road sign reading Kfar Sava in Hebrew and Arabic, and the caption names the town being surrounded:

Qalqilya — the same town four American papers called Jordan in 1956. The archive dated this clipping 27 October; the masthead says Monday, 22 October 2001, and that was a Monday.
