Protesters stone Israeli 'tank' in Manhattan
Associated Press

Transcribed from the clipping
NEW YORK — Demonstrators staged a mock stoning of a cardboard Israeli tank in midtown Manhattan Saturday, as hundreds of Palestinian supporters marched downtown from the Israeli Mission. A huge red banner reading “Free Palestine” led the 28-block march from the Israeli Mission near the United Nations to Union Square.
“We're trying to show that Palestinians are not heard in the media,” said Laura Wiltshire, a 19-year-old college student who was one of two demonstrators hoisting the cardboard tank on her body. Some marchers had labels plastered to their backs that read “Free Palestine,” and others were draped in Palestinian flags.
One protester carried a sign that read “Long live the Intifada.” The tank, made from green cardboard, was flanked by a figure of Uncle Sam walking on stilts. As the two protesters held up the tank, they danced to Arab music coming from a platform where speakers addressed the crowd.
George Habash, former leader of the Palestinian extremist faction, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, was among the speakers. “Allow me to express my eternal gratitude as I salute our people,” he said. “Allow me to bow before our beloved martyrs,” he added, referring to Palestinians who have died in the struggle with Israel.
Edward Said, a Palestinian scholar who addressed the group, said the conflict in the Middle East is not merely between two states. “It's a battle between an imperial colonial occupier — a state armed to the teeth by the United States — and an unarmed defenseless population,” Said told the crowd.
