A TOUGH TASK
Israeli-Palestinian mediators face uphill battle
Dan Perry and Josef Federman / Associated Press

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM — A surprise Mideast mediation effort by U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon underscores the world community's desire to stamp out the new flare-up of Israeli-Palestinian violence. But diplomacy faces an uphill battle with both sides deadlocked on the big issues and the current leaders being dragged along.
The United States and Jordan could prove especially important in determining whether the bloodshed will subside. The U.S. may be called upon to push for new talks, and the Jordanians can calm the atmosphere by negotiating with both sides about the Jerusalem holy sites over which they are the recognized custodians.
Much depends on giving the Palestinians a sense of some success — perhaps even hope for a fundamental change — while enabling Israelis to avoid feeling that they have bowed before terrorism. Here's a look at where things could go: WILL THE U.S. STEP IN?
There is a sense among observers that the U.S. administration would like to wash its hands of the Israeli-Palestinian conundrum. For nine months, ending in early 2014, Secretary of State John Kerry focused on a mediation effort that most locals considered to be not serious.
The effort indeed failed, and some consider it took valuable attention away from the meltdown in Syria and Iraq.

Date confirmed on the page (eva-folio). Adjudicated corrected against the printed page: No masthead or folio on this page; the only standing type is the section rail "NATION / WORLD", cropped at the top edge. The correction rests on a year-level contradiction that the story fixes beyond . Filed under the archive’s spelling; the page prints “The Herald News (Massachusetts)”.
Context added by this archive
"NATION / WORLD" above the picture is a section flag, not a dek; the dek is the line under the display headline.
Eisenkot appears nowhere in the body text — only in the photo caption, which reads: "Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon, left, speaks next to Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, center, and Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Gadi Eisenkot during a visit at a military outpost at the outskirts of Gaza Strip on Tuesday. U.N.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for calm during a surprise visit to Jerusalem on Tuesday ahead of meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, in a high-profile effort to bring an end to a month-long wave of violence." STEP IN? and LEADING OR FOLLOWING?
