A PLEA FOR PALESTINE.
WALTER WILLIAMS

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM, March 5.—Palestine is, of all lands, most persecuted. In history every man’s hand has been against it. The high bridge between the east and the west, the Euphrates and the Nile, it has been trodden beneath chariot wheel and soldier since the times of Thotmes and before. Its story is one long chapter of struggle, sorrow, suffering.
Twenty-seven sieges were sustained by its chief city, and, so often has Jerusalem been razed to the ground and rebuilt, that to-day the sacred city is literally, in the words of ancient prophecy, “builded upon its own heap.” The seams and scars upon the surface of the land are illustrative of the bitter experiences of the people of Palestine.
There is somewhat akin between physical surroundings and human character. In Palestine the marred visage of mother earth mirrors the history of the Hebrew nation. The country itself is pitifully small. The whole land could be comfortably tucked away in a Texas township. The single state of Missouri would make six Palestines.
From the Russian tower on the Mount of Olives one may see with the naked eye from border to border of the Holy Land. It is scarcely a Sabbath day’s journey the breadth of the kingdom of Judea. Herod the Great had for his dominion not so much territory as the average congressional district in America, nor scarce so many people to govern as the mayor of St. Louis.
