PALESTINE CLARIFIED.

As the result of Monday's debate in the House of Commons the White Paper on Palestine, in the words of the official spokesman for the Mac- Donald Government, still stands " as explained and simplified today." The process of explanation and simplifi- cation was so thorough as to allay every real and reasonable apprehen- sion aroused by the original Pass- field statement.

Its principal vice was in tone rather than in substance. Basing itself on an expert inquiry into economic conditions in Pales- tine by Sir JOHN SIMPSON, the White Paper managed to be far more pes- simistic than he was.

Whereas he made it clear that there is still plenty of land in Palestine to en- gage Jewish colonizing energies for many years, the Passfield statement contained a note of querulous cen- sure.
