Anti-Semitic Revolt Flares In Palestine

Transcribed from the clipping
“Beirut, Lebanon — (AP) — French sources said tonight that travelers from Palestine reported anti-semitic outbreaks and kidnaping of Jewish leaders in the Holy Land as a result of Arab reaction to events in the Balkans and Mesopotamia.
This account said some Zionist leaders had been abducted by Arab nationalists as disturbances led to bloodshed in several parts of Palestine, but that the British believed they could keep the situation in hand. Anti-semitic feeling, these reports said, swelled with the mass arrival of Jewish emigrants from the Balkans and then was aggravated by the Iraq situation.
The influential native Beirut newspaper published an editorial saying that British policy in Palestine had caused ‘bitterness on some minds.’ That bitterness is growing, it said, and the British ‘by no means have consolidated the ties which bound them to their allies of Iraq.’
Appeal To Arabs. New York —(AP)— The German radio said today that the Iraq government had directed an appeal to Arabs in Palestine requesting them to take up arms.”
Context added by this archive
One Associated Press dispatch out of Beirut ran in at least three American papers on 3 May 1941 under three different headlines. This one names the thing that happened as anti-Semitism. The Oakland Tribune (CP-1941-003) and the Spokane Chronicle (CP-1941-004) name Arabs instead. The body is the same in all three.
La Crosse sets the Beirut editorial as “bitterness on some minds”; Oakland sets the same quotation as “in some minds.” Both are transcribed here as printed.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
