“London—(WNS)— Modern science has made it possible to shoot with oranges as well as eat them. In a statement in the House of Commons by Colonial Undersecretary Hall it was revealed that the Palestine citrus crop is now being used for various acids needed in connection with the war industry.

The Palestine government, Hall said, had guaranteed 517,000 pounds in advances to citrus growers over a two year period. The government, he added, was prepared to give financial assistance if Palestine’s resources were insufficient.”

Context added by this archive

Six sentences about Palestine’s largest export. The growers are guaranteed half a million pounds and never identified. Jaffa oranges were grown by Palestinian Arab and Jewish farmers both; the item leaves the reader no way to know that anyone but the British and the crop were involved.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
