CAIRO, Egypt, Jan. 24—The Palestine Symphony presented its first Cairo concert of the season last night at the American University Hall under the direction of Michael Taube.

Apparently appreciating the good fortune of being able to hear in wartime musicians, most of whom have had long and distinguished careers in the best theatres and symphony orchestras in Europe, the audience filled the hall to capacity, a large proportion of the listeners being in uniform. The Bach suite, No.

3 in D major, opened the program and brought out the unsurpassable technique of the strings, one of the cornerstones of this orchestra’s fame. Mr. Taube’s talent for rhythmical differentiation was best exhibited in Beethoven’s Second symphony and Smetana’s Overture to “The Bartered Bride.”

How this transcription was made

Transcribed from the slide scan by a reader working off magnified crops, not by optical character recognition. The newspaper is printed on the clipping, in the credit line “Wireless to The New York Times.” above the dateline. The clipping carries no masthead, no folio and no printed year. The day and month come from the printed dateline, “CAIRO, Egypt, Jan. 24”; the YEAR comes from the hand-typed slide label and is not confirmed by anything on the page. The article’s wartime setting is consistent with 1941 but would be equally consistent with the two following Januaries.
