“JERUSALEM, April 23 (AP) David Ben-Gurion, premier-designate of the Jewish state, declared in a Passover broadcast Friday night that Jews are buckling on the sword and called upon them to ‘mobilize all hidden resources of strength, will power, devotion and ability.’ The Russian-born Ben-Gurion, who also has been designated war minister and commander-in-chief, spoke as thousands of Arabs streamed out of Haifa, Palestine’s big port, in a self-imposed exodus following Jewish conquest of the city… British army reports said the city was quiet after Haganah, the Jewish militia, stormed Arab strongholds and demanded the surrender of the remaining 2000 to 3000 armed Arabs… Jewish authorities said they had made themselves responsible for protection of Arab property in Haifa.”
