“Her name is Amal Abu al-Jamiyya. Amal means hope. She has never seen a Jew without a gun… ‘Because I don’t know her,’ Amal declared, ‘and she doesn’t know me.’ … She never told him about having been in Auschwitz. An eleven-year-old is named, aged, described and quoted at length, which this archive has very little of. The second passage is Cordelia Edvardson of Svenska Dagbladet, a survivor of Auschwitz, interviewing the PLO officer Salah Taamri about whether the Ansar prison camp was Auschwitz, and withholding the one fact that would have ended the conversation. The headline the paper put on the reporting is Cultural-hatred roots run deep, over a story whose own first sentences say the camp has been under military occupation since six years before the child in it was born. The story’s dateline says Israeli-Occupied West Bank; the AP photograph beside it is captioned Hebron, West Bank.
