JERUSALEM, July 6.—(Special Cable.)—The arrival here of Henry Churchill King and C. A. Crane, American commissioners named by the peace conference to investigate conditions in the Turkish empire and to report on questions concerning mandates over countries to be formed out of this empire, has created intense interest.

Their presence in Jerusalem also is serving to remove any danger of violence by natives against the Zionists. The consensus is that there will be no outbreaks, at least until after the decision of the peace conference has been announced.

The antipathy between natives and Zionists, however, is markedly increasing and certainly will become a battle of words before the American commissioners. The Zionists want a British mandate over Palestine, especially because of the promises made to them several months ago by Arthur J. Balfour, British minister for foreign affairs.

On the other hand, both Christians and Moslems want Syria and Palestine united under an American mandate. These Christians and Moslems now present a solid front, while there appears to be at least a slight division in the Zionist ranks.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
