Grand Mufti Asserts Moslems Are Afraid They Will Be Slowly Forced Out of Palestine.

“…‘Then Jews who plan to come here may expect to find an unfriendly Moslem?’ I asked the grand mufti. ‘If they come to stay,’ was his smiling answer. The grand mufti rose with us as we prepared to leave. His own son had served us tea to honor us, his guests. His own hands now lighted our path back to the City of David.
His ‘sallam’ was the last word we heard — ‘Peace’ — so like the Hebrew ‘sholom’ — the greeting of his fellow Semite that the mufti does not want to hear in the Promised Land.”

The clipping in this archive is the headline block. The column was read from the paper’s own page: Buffalo Evening News, 19 March 1919, page 9. It carries the same syndicated interview the Omaha paper had run two days earlier, word for word, set in three columns rather than four. The capitals are Buffalo’s own — City of David, Semite, Promised Land, where Omaha set all three lower case — and Buffalo has we heard where Omaha has we hear. The masthead reads BUFFALO EVENING NEWS; the paper is filed here under the name it carries now. Only the closing passage is transcribed, because the rest is the Omaha text.
Context added by this archive
The same interview the Omaha World-Herald ran two days earlier (CP-1919-001), and the line under the headline is the one that matters: slowly forced out of Palestine, stated as what the Grand Mufti asserts, in an American paper in March 1919. Omaha had used the space to say instead that the foreigners were too progressive for backward natives.
The main headline here also swaps the noun: Omaha’s Arabs fear Zionists; Buffalo’s fear Jews, with Zionism held back for the second clause.
