“JERUSALEM, May 4.—Jews said tonight their troops knocked out twenty Arab armored cars in an all-day battle against a big Arab force attacking four Zionist settlements in the Hebron hills… In Jerusalem itself a British Government spokesman said truce talks are proceeding ‘satisfactorily.’… The International Red Cross also took its first formal step in trying to win a truce in the Holy City. It invited Arab-Jewish response without any immediate reaction… Earlier, Trans-Jordan’s King Abdullah offered the Jews equal rights in a unified Arab Palestine. He warned through the U.N. that if they don’t accept this solution, violence will reach ‘the pinnacle of horror’ in the Holy Land after May 16.”
