“This was only 1,000 yards from Deir Yassin, which was seized yesterday by Irgun Zvai Leumi and the Stern gang, extremist underground groups. They said 200 Arabs were killed, half of them women and children… By unofficial count, 2,471 persons have been killed in Palestine since the United Nations voted last November 29 to partition the country. These include 1,049 Jews, 1,251 Arabs, 141 British, four Americans and 26 others.”

Day two. Same wire, same dateline day, the same sentence rewritten: occupied becomes seized, the groups are named, and the casualties arrive attributed to the people who caused them. A separate subhead on the page records that the figure was given to American reporters by the attacking forces, who put their own dead at four.
