“CAIRO, March 12 (AP)—Egyptian authorities are to announce Saturday a new organic law for the Gaza Strip giving Palestinians greater participation in the government. But the Egyptian military government will retain supreme powers. As published in the Gaza Official Gazette, the law gives Palestinians a big majority over Egyptians in the 30-man legislative council.

But the Egyptian governor general will have veto power over all legislation and Egyptians will dominate the nine-man executive council. This will be the first time Gaza Palestinians have had a hand in governing the strip as a whole. The strip has been governed by Egyptian military authorities since the 1948 Palestine war.”

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
