PALESTINE and ISRAEL
Arab leaders have been meeting in Khartoum to discuss policy towards Israel after the Middle East war. Here ALBERT HOURANI, Director of the Middle East Centre at St Antony’s College, Oxford, and author of books on Middle East and Arab history, describes the problem of Palestine and Israel as the Arabs see it.

Picture by David Newell Smith.” The three maps beside it are captioned: “United Nations’ plan, rejected by Arabs, would have split Palestine into Jewish State, Arab State and International zone round Jerusalem, linked in economic union.”
“First war left Israel with area twice that of Jewish State in UN plan, with rest of Palestine, including Jerusalem Old City, incorporated into Jordan, except Gaza Strip, under Egyptian rule.” “In latest war Israel occupied all former Palestine, Egyptian Sinai desert down to Suez Canal, and about 700 square miles of Syria.
Israel is claiming permanent possession of Jerusalem Old City (UN still advocates internationalised Jerusalem) but is not yet decided about other claims.”
