U.N. GROUP SMOOTHES A MIDEAST DISPUTE
Special to The New York Times

Transcribed from the clipping
PARIS, Nov. 3—A compromise resolution, unanimously adopted today by the 30-member executive board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, smoothed over a dispute about Israeli censorship of textbooks in schools for Arab refugee children. It agreed that the 55,000 pupils were entitled to an Arab education, free of hate propaganda.
But the organization left to the mediation of United Nations officials and the local authorities the question of how recent Middle Eastern history should be taught.

SCHOOLBOOKS THREAD — short, but the single most useful sentence in the batch for the vocabulary question, because of who is saying it. 'Israeli censorship of textbooks in schools for Arab refugee children' — that phrase is in the paper's own voice, in the lede, unattributed, unhedged.
Not 'alleged censorship', not 'what Arab states call censorship', not 'the screening of textbooks'. Censorship. Every other clipping in this thread reports the same programme using the censoring authority's own vocabulary — 'editing', 'decontaminating', 'expurgation', 'clearing', 'book surgery', 'eliminating anti-Jewish material'. This one names it.
It is also the only item in the thread in which the Palestinian side wins anything, however thin: the board 'agreed that the 55,000 pupils were entitled to an Arab education, free of hate propaganda' — and then 'left to the mediation of United Nations officials and the local authorities the question of how recent Middle Eastern history should be taught', which is to say it settled nothing about the thing actually in dispute.
No Palestinian is quoted; nobody is quoted at all. The word 'Palestinian' does not appear — the children are 'Arab refugee children' and the education they are entitled to is 'an Arab education'.
